The Defenders is an 8 part miniseries that will air on Netflix. The series will bring together several superheroes from the MCU including Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist. The four superheroes will be combining their powers to fight The Hand, who is threatening New York City along with her own team of henchmen with super powers led by Elektra.
Jessica Jones
The series is set in the broad MCU and the events of The Defenders take place after the events of the second season of Daredevil, and after the conclusion of the other MCU series on Netflix: Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Jessica’s Got Baggage
All of The Defenders are battling their own issues when they reluctantly join forces to fight The Hand. But Jessica Jones has the most emotional baggage to overcome to help the team. She didn’t want any part of being a superhero and is still reeling from her intense battle with Kilgrave and PTSD. It’s safe to assume that at the time when The Defenders need to come together she is still dealing with trust issues and trying unsuccessfully to avoid the spotlight. She’s more of an anti-hero than a hero and doesn’t want to team up with anyone, even with Luke Cage who she knows well.
Even with her internal struggles from her past looming, she is driven by the same moral code that led her to finally confront Kilgrave. She wants nothing more than to fade into obscurity and live her life as a private detective and not as a superhero, but her morals prevent that. Jessica Jones will use her powers and work with others when it’s necessary to save innocent lives.
Kilgrave
Part of Jessica’s baggage has to do with her relationship with the villainous Kilgrave.
The long wait for Jessica Jones season 2 might be worth it for fans now that it’s been revealed that David Tennant will reprise his role as the charming but evil Kilgrave. EW posted an exclusive photo of David Tennant on set with Krysten Ritter in his Kilgrave suit. Jessica Jones killed Kilgrave at the end of Season 1 after finally breaking free from his mind control over her. There are still many ways in which he could reappear to continue torturing the reluctant super hero.
Season 2 of Jessica Jones won’t be hitting Netflix until 2018. Until then, you’ll have to get your fill of her on The Defenders. Hitting Netflix on August 18th.
Jessica’s Not A Team Player
Even though she agrees to join The Defenders and help them take on The Hand, Jessica’s anything but a team player. Even with Luke, whom she has had an off again/on again relationship with, she’s sarcastic and makes it clear that she doesn’t really want to be there. In the world of superheroes who have an almost mindless drive to act altruistically, it’s refreshing to see a bunch of sarcastic and distrustful outsiders trying to form some kind of a team dynamic. Given Jessica’s issues with trust and her distaste for working with others, it’s going to be a struggle for The Defenders to get to a point where they can trust each other. Will they be able to overcome this to defeat the hand? We will soon find out.
The Defenders Debut
Netflix has done a great job bringing the MCU to the small screen with Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones. It will be interesting to see if they can bring those characters and their unique personalities together in The Defenders. The 8 part miniseries will be available to stream on Netflix on August 18th.
